AUBURN, Alabama --A Quan Weaver 10-yard touchdown run in overtime gave Central-Phenix City a narrow 27-24 win over Auburn in a big 7A Region 2 contest at Duck Samford Stadium. With just over four minutes left in the game, Central-Phenix City led Auburn 21-0 and looked to walk away with a solid victory over the home team. Then lightning hit the Tigers and they went on to score 21 straight points to tie the game at 21-21 at the end of the fourth quarter. A fumble TD recovery, two onside kick recoveries along with two Auburn touchdowns tied the game in that five minute stretch.

The Central defense was playing lights out for most of the game until the last moments of the game, but came up big again in overtime. Auburn had the ball first in overtime and kicked a field goal to go up three points, but Weaver ended the game on the first play in overtime for the Red Devils. "I never been around anything like this for 23 years," said Red Devils Head coach Jamie DuBose. "Leading by 21 points with four minutes to go, hats off to Auburn, we have to learn to make plays in crucial situations. Were celebrating a win, but big time players step up in big time moments and we had big time moments and nobody stepped up. Finally in overtime we did." Auburn recovered two huge onside kicks to give their offense two big series to score touchdowns and send the game into overtime.

In overtime for Central down three points, Weaver took the ball in his shotgun formation and hit a hole up a hole in the left side of the line and then cut back into the middle of the field diving for the end zone and getting the game winning touchdown. "I looked at this opportunity to lay down or get up so I just sacrificed for my team and got into the end zone," said the Red Devils QB Weaver. "When I hit the five yard line , I saw my block from the right side, cut back and just dove into the end zone."

Auburn had chances to score in the first half, but missed on two field goal attempts. The Tigers tried a trick play inside the Central 20-yard line and missed on a 43-yard field goal attempt midway through the second quarter.

Central started the scoring with 4:15 in the second quarter when Weaver hit Justyn Ross on a 29-yard touchdown pass. The Red Devils took an early 7-0 lead. The Central defense forced another punt by Auburn and drove the field late in the second quarter and with :39 seconds, Weaver hit a wide open Jamal Couch for a 17-yard touchdown play to give Central a 14-0 lead at halftime. Weaver finished the game completing 7-of-12 passing for 160 yards with two touchdowns and one interception along with 68 rushing yards in the game. "I've been playing quarterback all my life, changing to receiver after my eighth grade year," Red Devils QB Weaver said. "I feel natural playing this position and just want to help my teammates out and get better playing the position each week."

Central came out of the locker room and had the third down possession and moved the ball 80-yards for a Red Devils touchdown when Jaxton Carson scored on a 3-yard run and the Red Devils went up 21-0 with the defense playing lights out. "We played great but for the last four minutes of the game," said DuBose. "Quan had a great game tonight, didn't do to much, but he can play quarterback for us. He has a lot of playmaking ability."

Nothing was happening for Auburn on offense for most of the game, but with 3:49 left in the game, the Red Devils fumbled the football away and Courtney Jimmerson of Auburn scooped it up, broke a tackle and raced 52-yards for an Auburn touchdown to put the Tigers on the scoreboard. Central led 21-7. On the kickoff, Auburn went to an onside kick and recovered the ball around midfield. The Tigers were back in business. Auburn marched 49 yards to the end zone and scored when Bradley Northcutt hit Noah Barnes on a 12-yard touchdown pass. Auburn still down seven points with on 3:12 left in the game.

With Auburn with all three of their timeouts and still three minutes left in the game, the Tigers had a few options. This time Sage Ledbetter changed the 10-yard kick to a 20-yard flare in the air and recovered by Barned at the Central 33-yard line. A huge Cedric Clark 30-yard run gave the Tigers first and goal at the Central 2-yard line. Two plays later, Ledbetter took the ball into the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run. With the extra point by Ledbetter, now the game was tied at 21-21. "I was proud of our team, giving great effort thoughout the game," said Tigers Head coach Adam Winegarden. "We just kept fighting to the end, you just never know what can happen."
