DECATUR, Alabama -- Clay-Chalkville quarterback Ty Pigrome scored on a 9-yard touchdown run with 2:05 left in the game to give the #1 Cougars a 45-35 win over Austin in the AHSAA Class 6A Semi-final game. Clay-Chalkville will advance to the state championship game and play #2 Spanish Fort in the Super 7 Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.

Clay-Chalkville (14-0) has won 29 consecutive games and will return to the 6A championship game. "We have unbelievable kids and great assistant coaches," said Cougars Head coach Jerry Hood. "We talked to our kids before the season that this will be the toughest thing that you will every do. Are you mature enough to prepare for every single week so we could get back to this point."

Pigrome had a big game for the Cougars accounting for five touchdowns on the night. "Coach Floyd did a great job of calling those runs with Ty because it gives us an extra blocker," added Hood. "He is good enough to break a tackle, what an incredible kid that a lot of big time schools are going to miss out on him except for Purdue, Indiana and Georgia Tech. They are going after a special football player." Pigrome completed 10-of-18 passing for 173 yards and two touchdowns with 92 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns.

Clay-Chalkville was 5-for-6 scoring touchdowns in the first half. The Cougars scored first on a Pigrome 4-yard run with an Andrew Van Winkle extra point and with 8:38 left in the first quarter, Clay-Chalkville led 7-0. That lead didn't hold long as Austin came right back on a Victor Garth 43-yard TD run for the Black Bears with 5:55 left in the first quarter. Ivan Torres kicked the extra point and the game was tied at 7-7.

With 3:19 left in the first quarter, Clay-Chalkville marched right down the field and scored on a Pigrome 7-yard TD run along with a Van Winkle PAT and the Cougars led 14-7. Austin tied the game with 1:37 left in the first quarter, when Garth hit Jalik Jaggwe on a 41-yard TD pass play. Torres kicked the PAT and the Black Bears tied the game at 14-14.

Clay-Chalkville took the lead again with only :35 seconds left in the first quarter when Quentin Young scored on a 29-yard TD run for the Cougars. Van Winkle added the PAT for a Cougars 21-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, the Cougars turned a stop on defense and a touchdown on offense with a Pigrome to T.J. Simmons 65-yard TD pass play for the Cougars. The Van Winkle PAT gave the Cougars a 28-14 lead with 8:40 left in the half. With 2:39 left in the half, Austin answered back with their own touchdown when Asa Martin scored on a 8-yard TD run for the Black Bears. Torres kicked the PAT and Austin trimmed the Clay-Chalkville lead to 28-21.

Austin forced a Cougars punt late in the second quarter, but with :38 seconds left in the half Amari Holloway picked off a Black Bears pass to setup the Cougars offense. With only :16 seconds left in the half, Pigrome found a wide open A.J. Walker on a 3-yard TD pass play to give Clay-Chalkville a 35-21 halftime lead.

In the second half, the defenses made some adjustments and it turned into a defensive game in the second half. With Austin having two potential SEC offensive lineman, the Cougars defense forced Austin to throwing the football and getting them into a pass oriented team. "When you run the football 76 percent of the time and now you have to throw it and they did a great job of throwing it but I didn't think they would beat us that way," added Hood. "I so proud of our kids because we are a physical bunch and I don't think anyone gave it to them like we did. They gave it back to us and that was a good test for us."

In the second half, Austin scored first on a Garth to Eric Washington 28-yard TD pass play. A Torres extra point cut the Cougars lead to 35-28 with 6:20 left in the third quarter. Garth, a senior QB with running and passing skills, completed 14-of-37 passing for 280 yards with 3 TD's and 1 interception on the night. Garth had 75 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown on the ground.

WIth 10:22 left in the game, the Black Bears forced a field goal attempt by the Cougars and Van Winkle came through on a 22-yard FG that extended the Clay-Chalkville lead to two scores at 38-28. "We played pretty good on offense tonight," said Cougars QB Pigrome. "We left need to improve in the red zone because we left a few points out their that we need to get."

Austin cut the lead again with 4:43 left in the game when Garth hit T.C. Lowe on a 20-yard TD pass play. With the Torres PAT, Clay-Chalkville only led 38-35. When the Cougars needed a score late in the game, they get it like they have all season with Pigrome capping off the last TD of the game to put the game out of reach with 2:05 left in the game. "We had a tremendous season with this team," said Black Bears Head coach Jeremy Perkins. "We were 2-8 last season and started 2-3 this season and to get to the semi-finals was a great thing by this team and I couldn't be prouder. Our guys played hard tonight and this was a great football game. We proved tonight, we can play with anyone in the state."
