 Hoover 24, Oakland 6 Final | August 22, 2015 | Non-Region Game

MURFREESBORO, Tennessee -- With a few new faces on the Hoover Bucs defense became no problem as the Hoover Bucs rolled over Oakland 24-6 Saturday night in the inaugural Middle Tennessee Football Classic presented by Venture Express at MTSU's Floyd Stadium. Even though the Hoover offense struggled at times, Hoover played through the penalty mistakes and won their first game of the season.

Last year's 7A champion looked like a championship defense. Oakland only had 114 total yards on offense against a run oriented team. "First game, a lot of things we’ve got to do a lot better, said Hoover Bucs Head coach Josh Niblett. "But at the same time, I thought out defense played a great night, playing the wing-T. You just don’t see that stuff anymore.”

Hoover starting the scoring first in the game with 2:37 left in the first quarter on a Barrett Pickering 33-yard field goal to put the Bucs up 3-0. Hoover scored their first touchdown of the season when Chris Vacarella hit Jimmie Johnson on a 11-yard touchdown pass to give the Bucs a 10-0 lead.

With 1:46 left in the half, Rickey Palao recovered an Oakland fumble on the Patriots 10-yard line, but penalties and Bucs mistakes on offense took them away from the end zone, but Hoover still had the 10-0 lead. "I told someone in an interview last night, the biggest thing you worry about as a head coach is it is our first game with some young players with three back on offense and three back on defense," added Niblett. "They are going to be a little nervous but we made some plays and had a lot of energy, to much energy, but we got that corrected. I look to see a lot improvement from game one to game two."

In the second half, with 8:18 left in the third quarter, Vacarella hit Quincy Cox in between two defenders for a 20-yard touchdown play for the Bucs. The touchdown put Hoover up 17-0.The final Bucs touchdown came with 1:55 left in the third quarter on a Vacarella to Shedrick Jackson 56-yard touchdown pass and it put Hoover up 24-0. Vacarella finished the game 12-of-21 passing for 190 yards and three touchdown passes.

Oakland scored early in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard touchdown pass, but the game was over by then the way the Bucs defense played the first three quarters. "A lot of team chemistry and we are getting better," said Bucs linebacker Jeremiah Moon. "I think God we came away with the win."
