HOOVER, Alabama -- The Spain Park student section kept chanting "frustrated" to the Bucs for most of the first half and that's the way it turned out for the Hoover offense as Spain Park goes on to defeat the #1 Hoover 17-0 at the Hoover Met. It's been 13 games since Spain Park gets their first win in the series between the two teams and the first time Hoover has been shutout since 1991.

Spain Park (5-1, 4-0) went two for two in the first half in the red zone with a field goal and touchdown and it proved to be the difference tonight with the defense putting up a shutout. "It was huge in the game," said Jaguars Head coach Shawn Raney. "We got the big fourth down stop that was big and they missed a field goal. When you come play a team like this, you have to believe. When you start making plays early it started to give us some momentum and it gets better and better."

The Jaguars started the scoring in the game when Spain Park went on a 15-play 75-yard drive and kicked a 22-yard field goal by Crosby Gray. With 3:53 left in the first quarter, the Jags took a 3-0 lead. Hoover came back with a 10-play drive but a 37-yard field goal was missed and Spain Park kept its 3-0 lead.

After the missed field goal for the Bucs, Spain Park attempted a deep pass on first down and P.J. Hall picked off the pass and Hoover started the drive on the Spain Park 40-yard line. Hoover moved the ball to the Spain Park 19-yard line for a fourth and one play, but a Damon Wright tackle for a two-yard loss on the play turned away the Bucs for the second time in the first half.

After the turnover on downs by the Bucs, Spain Park drove 10-plays for 79-yards and scored on a 6-yard touchdown run by Larry Wooden with :25 seconds left in the half. With the Jags touchdown, Spain Park led Hoover 10-0 at the half. "This is a great accomplishment, the team has worked so hard this week in practice," said Jaguars defensive lineman Jonah Tibbs. "We finally got it and so now, we are on a one-game winning streak right now. Coaches put in a great game plan for our defense and we went out and executed it. This was an overall team effort."

In the second half to start the third quarter, the Bucs defense forced a three-and-out but fumbled the punt attempt and Spain Park had the ball at the Hoover 40-yard line. On the first play, quarterback Joey Beatty hit Willie Greene on a 41-yard touchdown pass for a Jaguars touchdown. With the score, Spain Park led 17-0 with 10:58 left in the third quarter. "We didn't play well tonight, but you have to give credit to Coach Raney and his team," said Bucs Head coach Josh Niblett. "I take this loss myself cause I didn't do a very good job of getting us prepared. They won the war up front on both sides of the ball. We will figure this out and it starts with me at the top."

For Spain Park, Beatty completed 12-of-19 passing for 127 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The Jags running game was led by Wade Streeter with 50 yards on 22 carries and Wooden with 71 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. Greene had 3 receptions on 60 yards and a touchdown. On defense, linebacker Perry Young and Chester Hutchers had six solo tackles apiece. Bryan Sanderson and Damon Wright had four solo tackles apience.

For Hoover, Chris Vacarella completed 13-of-27 passes for 140 yards with only five yards on eight carries. Vonte Brackett had 83 yards on nine carries. Jimmie Johnson had 7 receptions for 96 yards.

With the Spain Park win, the Jaguars lead 7A Region 3 with a 4-0 record while Hoover drops to 3-1 in the region.
