 Sparkman at Gadsden City | Friday, September 4, 2015 | 7A Region 4 Game
QB #2 Ahmad DeRamus (Gadsden City)

The Sparkman Senators travel to Gadsden City in a big 7A Region 4 contest Friday night. Both teams are coming off wins, Sparkman had to come from deficits three times in their game last week. Sparkman (1-0) had a punt return for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter that put the Senators up over Scottsboro 32-30 last week.

Hunter Gibson put Sparkman up for good with a 72-yard TD return with 2:46 left in the game to complete the comeback. "I think it says a lot about our character and having confidence to do it," said Senators Head coach Chris Cagle. "The players that we have, we can overcome some of those obstacles. We have some good players on both sides of the ball."

Gibson, a sophomore back-up running back, along with his punt return had a 97-yard kick TD return and a 55-yard TD run from the wildcat position. "Hunter does a lot of great things with the ball and without the ball," added Cagle. "Sometimes those skill guys want to be lazy and not block, but Hunter is not that way. There were three times we needed Hunter to make a block on fourth down and he did it. Those were huge plays."

Oshay Brown leads the Senators at the running back position. Brown had 113 yards on 12 carries and quarterback Mason Edwards had 117 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns against Scottsboro last week. "We have a lot of areas we need to improve on from last week," said Cagle. "We look for an improvement in those areas but we also need to work on those areas throughout the entire season. Especially playing against (Gadsden City) the most athletic team we will play all season."

Grant Thornton leads the Senators on the defensive line position and Josh Little leads the linebackers. "Josh is a super smart in the classroom and super smart on the field," said Cagle. "He is like having a coach on the field. He is going to make sure we are lined up in the right front and get us out of a bad situation."

Scottsboro put up over 400 yards of offense against the Senators and they know that they are going to have their hands full this Friday night with the explosive Gadsden City offense. "There are big, fast and physical," said Cagle. "They have a lot of talent, they are a run first, pass second team this season compared to his first two years. They run the ball so well so with any play action, they get people open."

Gadsden City (1-1) lost a hard one to Auburn in week #0 and won their first game last week against Oxford. The Titans used a strong run game and just wore down the Yellow Jackets.

The Titans have a lot of talent on offense starting with their lefty quarterback Ahmad DeRamus. DeRamus has a lot of weapons to give the ball to for the 2015 season. Running back Damon Williams comes off a good game with Oxford rushing over 100 yards last week. Running back Rodney Bozeman is a big 1-2 punch for the Titans. Gadsden City loves to run the football but does a great job with the play action pass. If you commit to many defensive players to the run, DeRamus does a great job on the play action and can hit the big time anywhere on the field. The lefty QB had 109 yards passing and 65 rushing yards last week.

At wide receiver, Darnell Mooney and Denzel Mooney can turn any short pass into a touchdown at any moment. Darnell Mooney had a 25-yard touchdown reception last week. Throw in Jalen Swain and the Titans put considerable pressure on opposing defenses. The Gadsden City offense is averaging around 40 points per game so far and with their weapons, they might be able to keep that pace all season.

As good as the Titans offense has been, the Titans defense has surrender a lot of points this season. The Gadsden City defense has given up 32 points per game so far this season. Linebacker Eric Ransom can go sideline to sideline for tackles, with good speed that can fly to the ball. Jarvis McKee at linebacker can clog up the middle with the best of them.
