 Hoover 42, Vestavia Hills 0 | Friday, October 17, 2014 | Class 7A, Region 3
RB #38 Kris Parker, Hoover - two TD's vs Vestavia Hills

HOOVER, Alabama -- The Hoover Bucs played one of their most complete games to go on and defeat cross-town rival Vestavia Hills for a 42-0 win at the Hoover Met. With the win, the Bucs win their first Class 7A, Region 3 title with a 6-0 region record and it was the biggest margin of victory between the two schools.

Hoover (6-2) had 431 yards of total offense, while only giving up 105 yards. The Bucs even had a big special team touchdown on the night while the defense scored with a pick-6. "I thought defensively we played real well tonight," said Bucs head coach Josh Niblett. "We were flat at little bit early on offense, we came on to play with great passion and great discipline in the second half. When these games keep getting a little bit bigger, bigger, bigger, the little things are going to become critical to the success of what we do."

The only touchdown in the first quarter came when Marcus Webb went 82-yards for a Bucs score. Webb led the Bucs rushing with 114 yards on only seven carries for a whopping 16.3 yard average.

The last touchdown in the first half came on a Kris Parker 8-yard run breaking a few tackles before diving into the end zone. Earlier in the week, Coach Niblett commented to me that Parker has been the missing piece in the run game with his blocking, but he had the big TD run for the Bucs. "Kris played exceptional, he is a leader on this football team," added Niblett. "He understands what we are doing and it gives us the opportunity to be successful. He does the little things, the dirty work. You see him carry the football, catching it out of the backfield. He played with unbelievable effort and I'm proud of him. He brings it to the table each day."

With the touchdown, the Bucs lead the Rebels 14-0 at the half and it was all Hoover in the half. Vestavia Hills came into this game with injuries on defense and the offensive line, but the biggest injury for the Rebels was at quarterback with Landon Crowder out for the game due to be injured last week against Spain Park. "Landon is a two-year starter and he is a great leader of this football team," said Rebels head coach Buddy Anderson. "His backup (Brett) Jones did a great job in the game. He made only the one bad throw on the pick-6."

In the second half, the Bucs scored two touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters. With 8:35 in the third quarter, the Bucs special teams scored with WR Alex Elam caught a punt over his head at the Bucs 11-yard line and turned it around and headed down the left sideline for an 89-yard punt return for a touchdown. "I know that I had to catch the ball first over my shoulder," said the Bucs Elam. "After that I just followed my blocks and turned on the speed. I felt like when I came to the punter, I knew I was going to go the distance and score the touchdown."

Hoover scored again in the third quarter when Malachi Herron had a 26-yard interception and returned it for a touchdown. The Bucs defense gave up only 2.1 yards per play. "We played a lot better since the beginning of the season," said Bucs linebacker Darrell Williams, "Were getting back to the way we used to play. We want to be the dominate defense." With the shutout, Hoover has three of them on the season.

In the fourth quarter, Parker scored his second touchdown on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Chris Vacarella. Vacarella entered the game after Jack Hutcheson was dinged up during the game. Vacerella had a big fourth down run of 17-yards for a first down that was the key play in the drive. Vacarella completed 6-of-10 passing for 65 yards with 31 yards rushing on four carries on the night.

The Bucs final touchdown was on a Galien Richardson 6-yard run to finish out the game for Hoover. Bradrick Shaw had 82 yards on 13 carries while Hutcheson completed 5-of-9 for 69 yards.

Up next for Hoover, the Bucs travel to Hewitt-Trussville to open the Huskies new stadium while Vestavia Hills host Tuscaloosa County.
