 Vestavia Hills 14, Hewitt-Trussville 3 | Class 7A, Region 3 | Friday - September 12, 2014
Buddy Anderson - Head coach of Vestavia Hills Rebels

TRUSSVILLE, Alabama -- Buddy Anderson won his record breaking win tonight as the all-time winningest football coach in Alabama as Vestavia Hills defeated Hewitt-Trussville 14-3 tonight. Anderson won his first game 37 years ago at Jack Wood Stadium in Trussville so it was fitting tonight that he broke the record at the same location.

Anderson gets victory No. 310 tonight and couldn't be more proud of his team. "I'm very thankful to get that win here tonight," said Rebels head coach Anderson. "God has a great sense of humor and this is very special." The win broke a tie with Fayette County Waldon Tucker for wins in the state of Alabama.

The score was 0-0 at the half but both teams had a chance to score in the first half. On the second drive of the first half, Hewitt-Trussville moved the ball 77-yards to the Rebels one yard line but on a fourth & one play, the Rebels stopped Huskies quarterback Zac Thomas for a one-yard loss and a big opportunity for an opening touchdown.

Vestavia Hills (2-1, 1-1 in Class 7A, Region 3) had their chance driving right before halftime. The Rebels fumbled the ball away to Huskies linebacker Jalen Williams at the Huskies 23-yard line.

The Rebels scored though when Landon Crowder scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 7:07 left in the third quarter. Vestavia Hills took a 7-0 lead. Crowder hit wide receiver Sam Harvey on a 40-yard over the shoulder pass reception down to the Huskies 14-yard line. That play was the key play of the Rebels touchdown drive.

Hewitt-Trussville (1-2, 0-2 in Class 7A, Region 3) on a T.J. McGettigan 27-yard field goal with 11:38 left to go into the game cut the Rebels lead to 7-3. On the Huskies drive, penalties came into play again and Hewitt-Trussville had to settle for a field goal. "Our offense didn't play very well tonight," said Huskies head coach Josh Floyd. "We have to get this penalties under control for us to be successful. Our defense gave us a shot to win this game."

Vestavia Hills pulled ahead with 4:33 left in the game when Crowder scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. A big Remington Patterson catch down the middle of the field setup the Rebels second touchdown of the game. "We really wanted to finish this game for our coach," said the Rebels QB Crowder. "I made a couple over throws in the first half but came back and made the adjustments. I have two great receivers in Remington and Sam and I wouldn't trade them for anything." Crowder finished the day only 2-for-5 passing for 77 yards but they were some big throws that made the difference tonight. Crowder added 75 yards on 14 carries on the ground.

The Rebels defense has only given up three touchdowns in three games this season and did a solid job of shutting down Huskies QB Thomas. Thomas finished with 80 yards on 25 carries and only 5-of-20 passing for 45 yards. A 70-yard touchdown pass was called back due to penalty. "The defense was outstanding," added Anderson. "We bend a little bit but we didn't break. I am very proud of our defense. We made some mistakes and we need to correct them."
