 Bob Jones 34, Huntsville 20 Final | Thursday - September 21, 2017 | Class 7A, Region 4 Game

WR #7 Sam Barnes TD reception vs Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Bob Jones overcame three first half turnovers to score five second half touchdowns to go on to defeat Huntsville 34-20 at Alabama A&M Thursday night.

Huntsville took a 7-0 lead in the locker room at halftime but Bob Jones changed the momentum early in the third quarter when the Patriots defense forced a three and out and Bob Jones took the ball and scored on their first possession of the second half. "I thought we played very poorly in the first half with bad execution on offense," said Patriots Head coach Kevin Rose. "We regrouped at halftime and ran a couple of special plays on offense to get us going. I thought our defense played well all night. Any time your down on the road playing a bunch of young guys, you want to see how they react. I thought our whole football team reacted well in the second half."

Bob Jones (3-2, 3-0) started off slow when the Patriots turned the ball over twice in their first two possessions and it led to two Huntsville interceptions. Safety Carter Johnson picked off the first pass while linebacker Jack Kreger recorded the second interception in the first quarter.

Huntsville turned the second turnover into a Panthers touchdown when Stoney Patton scored on a 5-yard touchdown run to give Huntsville an early 7-0 lead with 1:10 left in the first quarter. Both teams struggled to score in the second quarter, but Bob Jones drove over 50-yards on a drive but was denied on a 4th down play in Panthers territory to turn away a potential Bob Jones scoring drive.

With less the :30 second in the half, Bob Jones fumbled on their own three-yard line but three plays later Huntsville couldn't get into the end zone but the Panthers took the 7-0 lead into halftime. "I thought we played extremely hard, we came to try to win the game," said Panthers Head coach James Fleetwood. "We played well for two quarters, but we have to get back to work to play a full game. For a half, we were a pretty good football team."

Bob Jones came out of the half to get the defensive stop and with 7:34 left in the third quarter Demontrez Brown came around right end on a hand off and threw to wide receiver Sam Barnes on a 29-yard touchdown play. With the score, Bob Jones tied the score at 7-7. This was the first TD pass that Brown has thrown.

With 10:52 seconds left in the third quarter, Caden Rose scored on a 1-yard run for the Patriots and Bob Jones led 14-7. The Patriots defense stood again on a three-and-out and Bob Jones was in business again. With 8:23 left in the 3rd quarter, Rose hit Dylan Ray on a 24-yard touchdown pass in the middle of the field and Bob Jones led 21-7.

With 7:39 left in the game, Rose threw to Demontrez Brown on a bubble screen and Brown took it 11-yard to the end zone while busting a tackle at the goal line. "We came out in the second half and just executed our stuff," said Patriots WR Brown. "We came out a lot harder in the second half then the first half. This was a big win for us. We want to get those region wins. I wanted to get that touchdown. I didn't want to come up short." With the BJ touchdown, the Patriots led 28-7.

Huntsville came back with 5:04 left in the game, when Jackson Glover found Jordan Thompson on a 24-yard touchdown pass play in the end zone to cut the Bob Jones lead to 28-14. Bob Jones responded as Isaiah Hatchett scored on a 5-yard touchdown run for the Patriots and led 34-14 with 1:46 left in the game.

Huntsville scored the final touchdown of the game when Patton scored on an 8-yard run and the Panthers cut the Bob Jones lead to 34-20 with only :38 seconds left in the game.

Bob Jones scored five touchdowns in the second half and pulled away in the end. "I think our offensive coordinator Matt Patterson did a great job of simplifying the game plan in the second half and doing the things we do well. Caden executed the offense along with the whole offensive group. Demontrez made some big plays for us. Again we played a lot of offensive lineman and they are getting better."

One player that has to go the extra mile is Patriots defensive lineman and offensive guard and tackle Gavin Lewis that plays both ways on offense and defense. "For me it was easy to make the decision to play both ways because the team needed it." said Patriots DL Gavin Lewis. "That is what leaders do, anything they can for the team. If it is extra reps or extra running, I'm willing to do it to help the team. I will do whatever it takes."
