 Mountain Brook 28, Homewood 0 Final | Thursday - October 15, 2020 | Class 6A, Region 5 Game

MOUNTAIN BROOK, Alabama -- Michael Brogan scored four touchdowns as the Mountain Brook Spartans go on to win 28-0 over Homewood Friday night at Spartans Stadium. With the Spartans victory, Mountain Brook gets the Class 6A, Region 5 title tonight. The Spartans defense was steller all night long as Homewood only picked up a few first downs in the game.

Mountain Brook (7-1, 5-0) used a good ground game and a few key passes to get the win but Brogan was much of the workhorse for the Spartans. "It was a hard fought win," said the Spartans  senior running back Brogan. "I give all my credit to the offensive line. They played their best game of the season and dominated up front. It was a great game all around. It feels great to get this region title."

Homewood (5-3, 3-2) took the ball to start the game and drove deep into Spartans territory, but on a 23-yard field goal attempt was blocked and that was a close of a score that Homewood was going to have for the night. Both teams had solid defensive efforts in the first quarter as the quarter ended at 0-0. Blake Bunshaw picked off a Spartans pass for Homewood and Trent Wright had an interception for the Spartans early in the second quarter.

Mountain Brook quarterback Strother Gibbs was not playing in the first half and the Mountain Brook offense was sluggish, but with 5:10 left in the second quarter, Brogan scores on a 1-yard touchdown run and the Spartans took a 7-0 lead. Mountain Brook took over after a three and out with 2:53 left before the half, but Homewood turned away the Spartans at the Patriots 23-yard line to stop the drive right before the half. John Colvin made his first start of the season for the Spartans.

With Gibbs returning to play in the second half, the Spartans offense realed off 21 points and looked good on the offensive side of the ball. With 8:52 left in the third quarter, Brogan scored on a 5-yard touchdown run and Mountain Brook led 14-0. Homewood only had two first downs in the second half and the Spartans kept the pressure on the Homewood offense in the second half. "This is the Spartan way, playing hard every play and doing things right," said Spartans DL Braxton Wetzler. "This means the world to us getting that region title. We have a lot of confidence right now and we are going to keep playing hard each game. I do my job and I have a lot of great coaches that back me up along with my dad that has helped me on my reads and techniques."

At the end of the third quarter, the Spartans were driving again. With 11:19 left in the fourth quarter, Brogan scored on a 16-yard touchdown run and it gave the Spartans a 21-0 lead. With 5:34 left in the game, Brogan scored his fourth touchdown on a 7-yard touchdown run. With the score, Mountain Brook led 28-0. "After the Homewood first drive, I thought we controlled the line of scrimmage," said Spartans Head coach Chris Yeager. "We put pressure on the passer. After we shut the run down, they went to empty so we knew what they were going to do. Our defense front controlled the scrimmage. I thought the offense had a good game of running the ball with some good timely passes."

Brogan finished the game with 110 yards on 24 carries with the four touchdowns.

Up next for both teams, Mountain Brook will host Chelsea, while Homewood will host Briarwood Christian.
