BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The wind and rain dominated for much of the night, but in the football game, the Parker Thundering Herd defeated Mortimer Jordan 46-0 on Thursday night. The Parker defense dominated the game and held Mortimer Jordan to under 100 yards total on the night.
Parker (4-0, 2-0) has dominated with the starters in the first half. With 7:00 left in the first quarter, Timothy Merritt scored on a 12-yard touchdown run, and the Herd led 7-0. On the ensuing kickoff, Mortimer Jordan fumbled the kickoff, and Parker ran it into the end zone for the Parker touchdown. With the score, the Herd led 14-0. With only 57 seconds left in the first quarter, Chancellor Sparks scored on a 2-yard touchdown run, and Parker led 21-0 after the first quarter and dominated the opening quarter.
Both teams struggled during the second quarter due to the weather, but with 3:07 left in the half, Terence Gaines scored on a 5-yard touchdown run, and Parker led 28-0. Mortimer Jordan fumbled on their drive, and with 2:51 left in the first half, Merritt found Ketrell Davis in the back of the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown. With the score, Parker led 34-0. Mortimer Jordan hit on a long touchdown pass play, but the play was called back due to a holding call, and that was the only time they threatened in the first half. With 20 seconds left in the first half, Merritt scored on a 5-yard touchdown run, his second of the game.
Next, Parker plays Carrollton, Georgia, on ESPN 2 next week, and we will see if quarterback Dylan Reese will return from an injury. Mortimer Jordan will host Woodlawn in region play.
