 Bob Jones 28, Oxford 24 - Friday, November 14, 2013
DB #31 Tyler Brutofsky (Bob Jones) pushed out Oxford receiver out of the back of end zone late in 4th quarter

MADISON, Alabama -- With 1:59 left in the third quarter, the #3 Oxford Yellow Jackets took the lead for the first time in the game, but the #5 Bob Jones Patriots scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to go onto win 28-24 in a AHSAA Class 6A second round matchup.

Bob Jones (11-1) scored on a Ryan Crooks 13-yard touchdown run to put the Patriots ahead early in the fourth quarter. On the two point conversion, quarterback Jeremy Frye hit Crooks in the endzone for the two points and to put Bob Jones ahead 25-18. On the Oxford next possession, Oxford drives down the field and on a fourth down play at the Bob Jones 30 yard line, Yellow Jackets Ty Webber scrambles and throws deep into the end zone and a Yellow Jackets receiver catches it but defensive back Tyler Brutofsky pushes the receiver out of the end zone to perserve the Patriots lead at 25-18 with only 5:16 left in the game.

When Bob Jones took over on downs, the Patriots marched down the field and on a third down play, Patriots wide receiver Torrey Hunt catches a huge 22-yard pass from Frye to keep the drive alive and put Bob Jones in scoring position. A few plays later, Matthew Trulock kicks a 37-yard field goal with 1:43 left in the game and a 28-18 Bob Jones lead. "Torrey made a big catch in the win," said Patriots Head coach Kevin Rose. "That was a big field goal to put us up to scores in the game. We have been in some big situations that we have responded in all year. I'm proud of our guys."

With 1:06 left in the game, Oxford (9-3) closes the gap when Webber scores on a 16-yard run and the two point conversion failed along with the onside kick by Oxford and Bob Jones advances to the third round. "We fought for four quarters and I expected that from my team," said Yellow Jackets Head coach Ryan Herring. "We had some mental breakdowns on defense. You can't do that if you want to go to playoff round three. We didn't have a great game offensively, but I still think in big league football you better have a great defense and we made to many mental mistakes for that to happen tonight."

The big key for the win for Bob Jones was to stop Oxford running back Racean Thomas. Thomas finished the first half with only eight yards on 11 carries and finished the game with 81 yards on 22 carries and one touchdown. We really played as a unit to stop the run," said Patriots linebacker Nick Holman. "Everytime Thomas touched the ball, we wanted to get nine or 10 guys to the football. That was our goal this week to swarm to the ball. We think we have one of the best defenses in the state." Thomas, an Auburn commitment, finishes the 2013 season with 2,211 yards on 226 carries and 32 touchdowns.

Thomas left the game with 6:55 left in the fourth quarter and didn't return to the game. "I'm so pround of our defense," added Rose. "Thomas is probably the best running back in the state and we proud ourselves to play defense at Bob Jones high school and we did that tonight. I knew our defense would give us a chance to win. To hold this team to only 24 points is a special accomplishment. I'll say this again, Bryan Styles is one of the best defensive coaches in the state of Alabama and I wouldn't trade him for anything."

Bob Jones scored the first touchdown in the first half after a James Haraway interception that was returned to the Oxford 33-yard line. On the touchdown play, running back Miles Strickland took a pass from Frye and ran into the end zone from six yards out. A 17-yard pass play from Roderick Randolph from Frye setup the TD. "I'm just exstatic right now," said Patriots TE Randolph. "This is such a great win for Bob Jones and coach Rose. We played great as a team tonight. We just have to keep working hard to get better and keep this going."

With 2:49 left in the half, Trulock kicked a 38-yard field goal and put the Patriots up 10-0 at half. Randolph had anothers 11 and 20 yard catches to setup the field goal.

After the kickoff for the second half, Oxford scored quickly as Thomas ran 47-yards for a touchdown and put the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard. Bob Jones responded on a Jonathon Rice 9-yard touchdown pass from Frye to give the Patriots a 17-6 lead. Hunter Sparks had a key 13-yard pass reception to setup the TD. Frye had a big game for Bob Jones completing 25-of-32 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns and one interception. "I see a lot of heart in this team that we never give up," said Patriots QB Frye. "We give it 100 percent until the clock hits zero and we did that tonight. We just have to keep playing as a team."

Oxford scored again when Webber threw to Tredarian Gamble on a 13-yard touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone. Webber was 10-of-23 passing for 175 yards and two touchdowns and one interception. Gamble had six catches for 104 yards on the night.
