 Parker 42, Oxford 21 Final | Thursday - November 6, 2025 | First Round Playoff Game

WR Kentrel Davis on his 45-yard touchdown reception against Oxford on Thursday night

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama –  The chill in the air couldn't cool the fire of the A.H. Parker Thundering Herd on Thursday night, as they stampeded to a commanding 42-21 triumph over the visiting Oxford Yellow Jackets in the opening round of the AHSAA Class 6A playoffs. Parker's high-octane offense – spearheaded by quarterback Dylan Reese's pinpoint passing and a relentless rushing attack – overwhelmed Oxford from the jump, building an insurmountable lead by halftime.

"We have been working hard all week," said Herd quarterback Reese. "We have to get back to ourselves. We know we have to work hard for a state championship. We have to hunt, we have to go after these teams and work hard. We have guys everywhere; it is a show waiting to happen."

The victory, Parker's eighth of the season, catapults the Region 5 No. 2-seeded Herd into the second round, where they'll travel to play #3 ranked Muscle Shoals. The Yellow Jackets (6-5) lost, a loss that caps a rollercoaster campaign marked by flashes of brilliance but ultimately undone by defensive lapses and offensive inconsistencies. The matchup pitted two programs with rich histories against each other in a classic David-versus-Goliath tilt.

Parker, fresh off a 2024 state championship run, entered the playoffs riding a wave of momentum from a 3-1 finish to the regular season. Their only losses came to powerhouses Carrollton, Georgia, and Hoover, along with Homewood, but the Herd had been on a tear, outscoring opponents 189-62 in their last four games.

Oxford elects to receive after winning the toss. The Yellow Jackets' opening drive showed promise. With 10:48 left in the first quarter, Maddox Mims hit AJ Ford over the middle of the defense, and he raced 63 yards for a touchdown, and Oxford led 7-0. On a second and very long play, Parker scored on a deep pass. With 3:55 left in the first quarter, Reese found a wide-open Lazayveon Lowe behind the defense, and he raced 45 yards for a touchdown. The game was tied at 7-7.

With 1:51 left in the first quarter, Parker is driving again. Reese hit Kentrell Davis on a short pass, and he raced 45 yards for a Herd touchdown. Parker led 14-7 late in the first quarter. With only 11 seconds left in the first quarter, Cameron Murphy scored on a nine-yard touchdown run around the left end.

The Oxford defense got a stop, and with Parker punting to the Yellow Jackets, Ford took the punt return and broke open a big return down at the Parker 15-yard line. On the first play, Mims found a wide-open Beau Mims on a 15-yard touchdown pass, and Oxford was right back in the game with 6:17 left in the second quarter. Parker led 21-14 with the Oxford touchdown.

With Davis making a big reception on Parker's next drive late in the first half, the Thundering Herd scored again with 3:23 left in the half. A Reese to Lowe 19-yard touchdown pass put Parker up 28-14 going into halftime.

Parker got the ball to start the second half. The Thundering Herd scored two more touchdowns after halftime and pretty much sealed the playoff win. With 7:56 left in the third quarter, Chancellor Sparks scored on a 10-yard touchdown run and the Herd led 35-14. With Oxford getting the ball back and on the first Yellow Jackets play, Parker linebacker Nedarius Davis intercepted an out pass and returned it for a 20-yard touchdown, and Parker led 42-14.

With only 29 seconds left in the third quarter, Oxford didn't give up. Maddox Mims connected with Beau Mims on a 35-yard touchdown pass play, and Parker led 42-21. Both defenses showed up in the fourth quarter and kept the other team out of the end zone, but Parker advances to round two and travels to Muscle Shoals next week.

For Parker, Round 1: mission accomplished.
