MOUNTAIN BROOK, Alabama -- With #8 Mountain Brook scoring a touchdown in the second overtime, quarterback Hamp Sisson found wide receiver Wilson Higgins in the corner of the end zone to win 51-50 over #5 Spain Park in a classic matchup between the two teams in a battle of Class 7A, Region 3 contest Friday night.
Sisson found a wide open Hamp Greene on a 6-yard touchdown pass play to setup up the winning two-point conversion. "We had an awesome play call," said Spartans QB Sisson. "I had the option to run it but Wilson was open in the end zone and did a great job of keeping his foot in bounds for the touchdown. I am so proud to be a part of this team. So many people played well tonight. We had a great play lined up and we had a lot of confidence we could pull it off."
Sisson had a great night as he completed 16-of-20 passing for 243 yards and two touchdowns with the 2-point conversion along with 73 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns on the ground. "Were doing some things where Hamp is being successful, no doubt this was his best game of his career," said Spartans Head coach Chris Yeager. "Our defense was gassed and we knew we needed to go for that 2-point conversion. We had one shot. We weren't going to stop them. Our team poured it out their on the field and that is what we told them in the locker room that we could look at each other that gave it our all. So proud of this team. What a great game."
The game started out like it was going to be a defensive game due to the first score of the game came when Harold Joiner ran 37-yards for the first Spartans touchdown of the game. With the score, Mountain Brook (3-2, 1-2) led 7-0 with 6:23 left in the second quarter. Spain Park (3-2, 1-2) answered right back as Braxton Barker found Jalen Henderson on a 71-yard touchdown pass and the game was tied at 7-7 with 6:07 left in the second quarter.
With only :25 seconds left till halftime, Barker threw to Kenyon Hines on a 5-yard touchdown pass play to give Spain Park a 14-7 halftime lead. Barker had a big game for the Jaguars. Barker completed 22-of-28 passing for 311 yards and four touchdowns.
With 9:18 left in the third quarter, Sisson tied the game when he scored on a 4-yard touchdown run. The game was tied at 14 apiece. Mountain Brook forced a three-and-out and scored again when Sisson threw to Higgins on a 28-yard touchdown pass play. With the score Mountain Brook took a 21-14 lead.
With :28 seconds left in the third quarter, D'Arie Johnson scored on a 14-yard run and Spain Park tied the game at 21 all. With 6:53 left in the game, Johnson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run but the extra point was missed and the Jaguars led 27-21 midway through the fourth quarter. With 4:01 left in the game, Joiner tied the game when he scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. With the extra point, Mountain Brook led 28-27.
With only 1:27 left in the game, Barker threw to Michael Rogers on an 18-yard touchdown pass and the Jaguars took back the lead at 33-28. This touchdown looked like Spain Park was going to get the win. The two-point conversion failed, but the Jags led late in the game.
Mountain Brook used their magic again when Sisson scored on a 10-yard touchdown run along with Joiner throwing a two-point conversion pass to Higgins and Mountain Brook took a 36-33 lead with only :30 seconds left in the game.
Spain Park drove down the field with only :30 seconds left in the game and gave Spain Park kicker Cole Starr and chance to tie the game. With the ball down, Starr kicked the 41-yard field goal to tie the game with no time left in the game and this classic game was going to overtime.
Mountain Brook took the ball first and on the first play Joiner scored on a 10-yard run around the left side of the line to get the touchdown and to give Mountain Brook the 43-36 lead. Now it was Spain Park who had to score. No problem for the Jags as Barker found JoJo Dennis for a 5-yard touchdown pass play to tie the game at 43-43.
In the second overtime, Johnson gets the 2-yard touchdown run to give Spain Park the 50-43 but it was Mountain Brook the turned the tide to get the big Region 3 win.
Greene had 10 receptions for 141 yards for the Spartans. Joiner added 85 yards on 16 carries in the thriller.
For Spain Park on defense, Cedric Tooson had 8.0 tackles in the game for the Jags. Clay Christian added 6.5 tackles for Spain Park.
