MADISON, Alabama -- The #8 Bob Jones Patriots created three fourth quarter turnovers and defeated their cross-town rival James Clemens 28-20 tonight in the Madison Bowl. With Bob Jones trailing 20-14 at the end of the 3rd quarter, the Patriots defense turned up the pressure to get two interceptions and a fumble recovery while turning them into 14 4th quarter points and the Class 7A, Region 4 win.
It looked early in the second half that the James Clemens run game was going to take over the game in the third quarter, scoring two touchdowns and pounding the ball right at the Patriots defense. The Bob Jones defense shut out the Jets offense in the fourth quarter to get their fifth victory over James Clemens in five tries.
"We wanted to come out and execute on defense with my teammates tonight," said Patriots defensive lineman Gavin Lewis. "I think we made some good adjustments coming into this game and they way we played in the fourth quarter. We knew they were going to run the football at us and we came together as a team to do what we need to do to get the win."
The game turned for Bob Jones in the fourth quarter when the Patriots recovered a James Clemens fumble deep into Jets territory at the James Clemens 5-yard line. On the first offensive possession for Bob Jones, Brady Polson rolled out and found Milkhi Stewart for a 5-yard touchdown play for the Patriots. With the touchdown and the extra point, Bob Jones led 21-20 with 11:03 left in the fourth quarter. Polson completed 13-of-27 passing for 310 yards for three touchdowns and two interceptions in the win. Milkhi Stewart caught four passes for 129 yards on the night.
After the Bob Jones (2-1, 1-0 Class 7A, Region 4) touchdown, James Clemens was driving but on a Jets pass play, the ball was tipped and fell into the hands of Milkyle Stewart for a 40-yard touchdown interception for the Patriots. With the score, Bob Jones left 28-20 with 5:39 left in the game. "I been studying film all week and knew that the ball would be coming my way," said Patriots DB Stewart. "This was a great win for us, but we want to go way further than this game."
James Clemens (0-2, 0-1 Class 7A, Region 4) had one more chance for the tie when a special team mistake cost the Patriots some valuable field position with 1:55 left in the game. James Clemens took over the ball at the Patriots 36-yard line for a chance to tie the game up. After a Jackson Nowlin 9-yard sack, defensive back Kyle Parker picked off a James Clemens pass with :38 seconds left in the game to seal the victory for Bob Jones. "We made enough plays on both offense and defense tonight," said Patriots Head coach Kevin Rose. "This is a big win for us, we just played a good football team. We played against the best front-seven that I've seen in 24 years of coaching."
Bob Jones scored first in the game when Polson found Milkhi Stewart on a 37-yard touchdown pass over the middle of the field. With 8:58 left in the half, the Patriots led 7-0. With 3:28 left in the half, James Clemens workhorse Bradley Belt scored on a 5-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7 going into halftime.
In the second half, James Clemens took the lead when Belt scored on a 11-yard touchdown run for the Jets. The James Clemens touchdown drive went 83-yards on just three plays and the Jets took a 14-7 lead with 9:38 left in the third quarter. With 7:59 left in the third quarter, Bob Jones scored on a Polson to Sam Barnes 12-yard touchdown play. The Patriots drove 80-yards on seven plays and the game was tied at 14 all. Barnes had four receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. "I have a lot of confidence on our receivers to make the plays," said Patriots QB Polson. "A lot of people doubted that we could win this game, but we knew inside the house that we were going to get it done."
With 3:59 left in the third quarter, Belt scored his third touchdown of the game on a 2-yard touchdown run. Belt was the workhorse for the Jets as the senior rushed for 162 yards on 38 carries and three touchdowns.
Kyriq McDonald and Torolla Walker had interceptions for the Jets defense that stopped the Patriots run game all night long. Brad Anderson was limited in the run game for Bob Jones after being hobbled with an ankle injury early in the game.
Both teams roll on with Region 4 games next week. Bob Jones travels to Sparkman, while James Clemens will host Gadsden City. Both teams will be looking for their first win of the season.
