Thompson 34, Auburn 21 Final | Friday - November 15, 2024
AUBURN, Alabama -- Trent Seaborn threw for two touchdowns as the #5 Thompson Warriors upset the #1 Auburn Tigers 34-21 in the Class 7A quarterfinal playoff game at Duck Stadium on Friday night. Michael Dujon added two touchdowns and 75 yards on 13 carries in the win for the Warriors.
Thompson (9-3) took an early 14-0 lead at halftime. The Warriors' defense set the tone early in the game and pretty much closed down Auburn's high-powered offense for much of the game. "Our program was built on games like this," said Warriors head coach Mark Freeman. "Back in the years when we were building the program, they were built on our kids going and winning these kinds of programs. For the first time in a long time, we've been an underdog, and it actually felt pretty good being an underdog." MORE GAME STORY
Vestavia Hills 42, Mary-Montgomery 21 Final | Thursday - November 7, 2024
SEMMES, Alabama -- Rebels quarterback Charlie Taafee scored three touchdowns and passed for another as the Vestavia Hills Rebels defeated the 7A Region 1 champions, the Mary-Montgomery Vikings, in the First Round of the 2024 playoffs at Grider Field on Thursday night. Vestavia Hills will play the winner of the Central-Phenix City at James Clemens game played this Friday night.
Vestavia Hills (6-5) has been to the Second Round of the playoffs for the last three years. "To win and advance in the playoffs, you have to be able to do both," said Rebels head coach Robert Evans. "Our offense made many plays, and that first drive set the tempo. I told our guys we are built for this. We are. Our schedule is hard enough. We have seen the best that the state has to offer, but we are playing better football than when we played earlier this season. On a given night, if we play clean football, we can play with anybody in the state." MORE GAME VIDEO
Hoover 38, Vestavia Hills 20 Final | Friday - October 25, 2024
HOOVER, Alabama -- A big defensive play before halftime turned the momentum to give the Hoover Bucs a 38-20 win over Vestavia Hills on Friday night. With Hoover leading by three points late in the first half and Vestavia Hills driving inside the Bucs 35 yard line, defensive lineman Tyson Bacan grabbed the Rebels quarterback, and Justyn Hartley intercepted the pass to return it for a Hoover touchdown to go up 24-14 and change the momentum in the game.
In the second half, Hoover outscored Vestavia Hills 14-6 in the second half and really wasn't that close as the Rebels scored a late touchdown. "I saw a lot of fight, and I know it wasn't a clean game, but I'm proud of my guys staying focused," said Bucs RB JR Mosley. "This means everything to us. It felt good getting a statement win since we fell short last year." MORE GAME STORY
Carver-Montgomery 44, Opelika 35 Final | Thursday - October 24, 2024
MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- After trailing 28-6 in the second quarter, the #9 Carver-Montgomery Wolverines outscored #2 Opelika 38-7 to get a Class 7A, Region 2 win at the Cramton Bowl on Thursday night. Enterprise holds the #4 spot in the region and needs a win against winless Smiths Station (0-9) on Friday night to lock in a playoff spot and keep the Wolverines out of the 2024 playoffs. Carver-Montgomery lost to Enterprise 17-14 earlier in the season and had two shots at the 1-yard line to get the winning score but was denied late in the game, and the Wildcats held onto the win.
Carver-Montgomery (6-3, 4-3) snapped a three-game losing streak and rebounded to get this win in their last game of the season. "When I got here in March, I had a bunch of boys," said Wolverines head coach Bobby Carr. "I reminded them at halftime. I watched them grow into men; it was time to finish this game. We were knocked down but got back up, which is life sometimes. These kids have done this all year long. The seniors have bought in all season, and I could not be more proud of them." MORE GAME STORY
Hoover 27, Thompson 26 Final | Friday - October 18, 2024
ALABASTER, Alabama -- A Jonah Winston touchdown run and a Matthew Daibes extra point gave the Hoover Bucs a 27-26 overtime win over the Thompson Warriors at Warrior Stadium on Friday night. With the Bucs win, Hoover claims the Class 7A Region 3 title and gets the number one seed in the region.
Thompson took a 26-20 lead as they scored on their first possession of overtime, but the extra point was blocked, opening the door for the Hoover win. The Bucs touchdown and extra point gave Hoover the one-point win in overtime. "That play has been their all game," said Bucs WR Winston. "I told our boys that I have them. When the offense struggled, the defense picked us up; when the defense struggled, the offense picked it up. I saw the hole and walked in." MORE GAME STORY
Opelika 30, Enterprise 13 Final | Friday - October 11, 2024
OPELIKA, Alabama -- Blake Johnson scored two first-quarter touchdowns, and the Opelika Bulldogs rolled to a 30-13 win over Enterprise in a Class 7A, Region 2 game in Bulldog Stadium on Friday night. The Bulldogs defensive front line played a key role in giving up only two scores to Enterprise, putting a lot of pressure on the Wildcat's offense for much of the night.
"Great team camaraderie, we all came together, and a great team win," said Bulldogs defensive lineman E'Mauri Smiley. "All week, we talked about doing our job. We feed off each other. We have great chemistry together as a defensive unit. Big win for our team."
Auburn 38, Central-Phenix City 33 Final | Friday - October 4, 2024
PHENIX CITY, Alabama -- Auburn quarterback Jackson Kilgore threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns as the #2 Auburn Tigers defeated the #1 Central-Phenix City Red Devils 38-33 in a Class 7A, Region 2 showdown at Garrett-Harrison Stadium on Friday night. Both teams had the lead in the game, but the Tigers got a couple of key stops on defense in the second half for the big region victory. Auburn running back Omar Mabson scored three touchdowns, two on the ground and one in the air.
Auburn had the ball with four minutes left in the game, leading 38-33, and decided to go for a fourth and one at their own 38-yard line; that could have been trouble if the Central defense could have made one more play, but Kilgore gets the two yards for the first down, and the Tigers run out the clock for the win. "We never quit tonight," said Tigers head coach Keith Etheredge. "They have a great football team. It came down to the last drive, and we had to get the first down. It was fourth and inches; our offensive line got a big push, and Jackson did the rest. If we don't get that right, they will get all the momentum and a short field. I am really proud of our guys."
